- All new clients and clients who have not had a colour service with Moose House Of Hair for at least 6 months, have to have an Allergy Alert Test (AAT) before any colouring services.
ATT must be carried out a minimum 48 hours before & maximum 7 days prior to colour application - Clients must consent before performing an AAT.
This will be documented and kept on record for 6 years - AAT questionnaire to be filled out by client in salon, after an AAT and before a Colouring service – Client must give consent to colouring services being carried out.
This will be documented and kept on record for 6 years - In the event of a national lockdown and the salon being closed for a considerable amount of time. All clients will be asked to have another AAT before their next colour.
This is in line with manufacturer’s guidelines, industry bodies and insurance policies - We will send out a Colour Screening Questionnaire (attached to an email) to all clients after their first initial colour appointment. This must be filled in and submitted back to Moose House Of Hair before their colour appointment.
Depending on the answers given, the client may need to have another AAT before their next colouring service. Failure/refusal to have another AAT (if required) will result in their appointment being cancelled. - Every client must have an AAT at least every six months.
This will be monitored from their last AAT. - We understand that it can be annoying and also time consuming to travel to the salon for an AAT. We can now offer clients the option for a free AAT within the salon or a Colourstart Passport which they can purchase for £15.
Below is more information about the two options and to help our clients make a decision of which test is best suited for them.
Allergy Alert Test
Whether it’s your first AAT at Moose House Of Hair or it has been more than 6 months since their last AAT, an appointment will be made to attend the salon at least 48 hours before a colouring appointment. We will apply a small amount of colour formula behind the ear and left it for 48 hours. Should you experience any signs of irritation, reddening, swelling, inflammation or itching please contact us. If you develop symptoms that make you unwell, please contact a medical professional.
When you attend the salon, we will observe the test site and ask you to complete a questionnaire. Some of our colour services may not require an AAT but are subject to screening questions. We advise you to speak to our team about what is best suited for you.
All of the Moose House Of Hair team have been trained to test and screen for suitability for colour services. We have vast experience in safe and responsible colouring – you can be sure we only use the best products and invest in the most up to date practices. We take your safety and our work seriously so when you visit Moose House Of Hair, you have peace of mind that we are taking the best care of you and your hair.
Colourstart Passport
Please register on the Colourstart website www.colourstart.com and create your passport. Answer the screening questions, apply your Colourstart Patch following instructions in the video below.
Upload your results to your online passport. Share your results with Moose House Of Hair – (we’re registered with Colourstart). Once you have created your passport and completed your first test, subsequent colour treatments require you to answer the screening questions – testing with a Colourstart test may not be necessary on your future appointments unless something changes. Your Colourstart Passport will confidentially store your records.
Colourstart is a clean and convenient way to screen for potential allergy to one of the chemicals, called para phenylenediamine (PPD), found in most hair colours. To reduce the risk of experiencing an allergic reaction to hair colour, some manufacturers recommend screening for allergy by using an Allergy Alert Test (AAT) on the skin.
Colourstart can be used instead of the AAT to test for allergy to PPD.

Frequently Asked Questions
I cannot get to the salon or I live too far away to have an AAT in the salon, what are my options?
We now offer ColourStart as an alternative way to test our clients who cannot come to the salon. The test is sent out to your home address.
What is ColourStart?
ColourStart is a ready to use patch test for finding out if you might be allergic to one of the ingredients, called PPD found in most hair colouring products
How much is Colourstart and where do I buy it?
Signing up and ongoing screening on the passport is free. The Colourstart test is £15. You can buy it from Moose House Of Hair or from www.colourstart.com
One of the Moose House Of Hair team members said Colourstart is not suitable for me, why is that?
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have active dermatitis you cannot test with Colourstart. You should speak to our team about booking an AAT (Allergy Alert Test) in the salon.
I have purchased a ColourStar test, how do I use it?
In the test sent to you, you will find the full set of instructions, please read these carefully before use. There is a video link on our website to guide you through application of a ColourStar test.
When do I need to apply the ColourStart test before my appointment?
It is advised to use the test a minimum of 5 days before your colouring service so please purchase in advance of your appointment
What happens in the event I haven’t completed the full test prior to my colouring appointment?
Failure to carry out the ColourStart test in time for your appointment will unfortunately mean you have an inconclusive test result and we will have to reschedule your appointment.
How long does an AAT take and how much does it cost?
You will need an AAT appointment a minimum of 48 hours before your colour appointment. It will only take 5 minutes in the salon and it’s free to all clients.
Why do I need an Allergy Alert Test?
Reactions to hair colour can be serious and in rare cases life threatening. There are strict guidelines from manufacturers, insurers, industry bodies and the MHRA around using hair colour on our clients.
An AAT is for your safety and wellbeing and reduces the risk of a severe reaction.
I have been colouring my hair for years, why do I need a test?
One of the triggers for sensitivity and reactions to hair colour is exposure over time, therefore it is important we keep monitoring for your safety. Moose House Of Hair is committed to your safety and we only use the best products and methods for hair colouring.
Will I need to have another AAT at some point in the future?
Yes, all clients are required to update their AAT every 6 months. Clients may be required to have another AAT within this time period depending on the answers they give to our Colour Screening Questionnaire.
